Before & After

Why is a root canal needed?

When a tooth becomes infected within the root canal, the long passage filled with dentin (the soft tissue underneath the enamel, which is the exterior covering) and the pulp (the veins and nerves), that if left untreated can cause inflammation or infection. Normally this occurs when a tooth cracks or breaks. To prevent inevitable infection, a procedure called a pulpectomy that is an endodontic treatment to fix this.

The procedure entails that the infected pulp be removed and a filling material called Gutta_percha, a thermoplastic polymer of isoprene. Once done a filling is put in place to cover the cavity.

If the tooth is badly damaged, a crown may be required.
